A seven-member board of school commissioners governs Richland School District One. Board members are elected to four-year terms, on a staggered basis, in nonpartisan elections. Three are elected at large, and four are elected from geographic districts. All present board members participate in the S.C. School Board Association's (SCSBA) Boardmanship Institute, a training program for school board members. Several have reached the highest level in the institute.
