Richland One Students Win Various Awards
Richland One congratulates its students who have excelled in the arts, academics and that all important life skill, perseverance. Their achievements are listed below.
Flora’s JROTC Wins Superintendent’s Trophy
The A.C. Flora High School JROTC captured first place in the annual Superintendent’s Trophy competition for district high school JROTC programs. As the 2007 champions, the Falcon JROTC program earned a $100 cash prize and possession of the rotating Superintendent’s Trophy for the next year.
Cadets were judged in five areas: uniform wear, drill, physical fitness, community service and academics. The Flora cadets won with a total of 685 points. Columbia High School, the defending champion, finished second with 675 points. C.A. Johnson and Keenan cadets tied for third place with 610 points each.
Students Receive English Merit Awards
Five Richland One students received National English Merit Awards for outstanding academic performance during the 2006-07 school year. As honorees St. Andrews Middle School students Blake Thrower, Lexus Rodgers, Jarice Thompson, Vanessa Marshall and Nathaniel Harper are eligible for scholarships of up to $10,000 from the United States Achievement Academy Scholarship Foundation, the national nonprofit organization which sponsors the awards.
Student Recognized for Excellence in Drama
Lindsay Rene Lesesne, a Dreher High School student, was named first alternate in drama in the statewide Archibald Rutledge College Scholarship Competition. Lindsay was one of 25 of South Carolina’s top fine arts students chosen to participate in the annual spring scholarship event which is sponsored by the State Department of Education.
Student Artists and Writers Featured in Library Magazine
The artwork and creative writings of 14 Richland One students are being featured in the 2007 edition of "Kids in Print," the annual children’s literary magazine sponsored by the Richland County Public Library. Students featured in this year’s publication include Imani Ross-Jackson, A.C. Moore Elementary School; Moss Bresnahan and Cecily Kaufmann, Brennen Elementary School; Courtney Giles, Brockman Elementary School; Roderick Bishop, Carolina School for Inquiry; Avery Harrison, Columbia High School; Bridgette Osment, Crayton Middle School; Jessica Edmonds and Chaun Morris, Hand Middle School; Mishon Hampton, Hyatt Park Elementary School; Nikia Johnson, St. Andrews Middle School; and Kyle Greer, Lester Lawson and Manuel Zambrana, Southeast Middle School.
Four Graduates Achieve Perfect Attendance
Years of perseverance have led to an achievement few of us could claim: 12 years of perfect school attendance. Four 2007 Richland One graduates went through 12 years of school without missing a single day. The South Carolina Department of Education’s list of seniors with perfect attendance includes Dreher High School graduates Hurisheo Jabrae Jones and Asher Vincent Quave-Robinson, as well as Cornetta Josett Pickett and Alvinia Geretta Thompson of Keenan High School.
Liberty Day Essay Contest Winners Announced
A way with words and a patriotic spirit earned three Burnside Elementary students cash and other prizes in a Liberty Day essay contest sponsored by the Lower Richland Ruritan Club. Fifth-graders Amber Brown, Ashley Ingram and Diquan Day-Grant received $50 US Savings Bonds and dinner with the Ruritans at their May meeting. The essay asked students to express their feelings about "What It Means to Be An American."
