DREHER STUDENTS TO TAKE ON ‘CHALLENGE’

Fifty freshmen from Dreher High School will participate in an award-winning national youth initiative that Oprah Winfrey says 'could change the world.'

Dreher was selected by the Palmetto Project to be one of four pilot schools in South Carolina for Challenge Day.

During Challenge Day, teens and community leaders explore ways that they can create stronger, safer school campuses. The program engages participants in exploring shared values and strategies for enhancing the social and academic environments on their campuses.

In November, Winfrey featured Challenge Day on a show on innovative programs that are changing the lives of young people.

The local Challenge Day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 6 in the Martin Luther King Park gym, located at 2300 Greene Street in Five Points.

Throughout the day, 18 volunteer facilitators will lead the Dreher students in a series of powerful, high-energy exercises and reflections in which they will talk about their values and aspirations, while setting new goals that will shape their campus life.

One of the goals of the Palmetto Project, a nonprofit statewide organization, is the implementation of student-led strategies to create stronger schools and a positive, more inclusive learning environment on school campuses across the state.

Challenge Day is one of Dreher’s first activities in celebration of Black History Month this year.
