Richland One Schools Promote Literacy, Parent Involvement
Richland One schools are promoting reading, other literacy skills and family involvement in a variety of events this week:
Tuesday, November 17
Southeast Middle School: Real Men Read!
8-9 a.m.
The school hosts its first-ever Real Men Read program with about 30 male readers from throughout the community including Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Richland One Superintendent Dr. Percy Mack.
Arden Elementary School: Male Literacy Night
6-8 p.m.
It’s all about the men on this night. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and other adult males will enjoy an evening of dinner, entertainment and reading with keynote speaker Steve Benjamin, a Columbia lawyer and businessman. Arden is encouraging more adult males to get involved in students’ education.
Carver-Lyon Elementary School
Nacho (not your) Average Literacy Night
6 p.m.
After learning about online education resources and storytelling, parents are invited to munch on some delicious nachos with cheese and enter drawings for door prizes.
Wednesday, November 18
Webber Elementary School: Family Literacy Night
6-7:30 p.m.
Parents are invited to get hands-on tips to help their children become better readers. Refreshments and child care will be provided.
Thursday, November 19
C. A. Johnson High School: Reading and Rocking at Harvest Fest
6-8 p.m.
Families in the C.A. Johnson High School community (including W. A. Perry Middle School, Watkins-Nance Elementary School and Carver-Lyon Elementary School) are invited to enjoy a meal as they listen to community readers and learn about the importance of literacy. Families also will receive free books.
Carver-Lyon Elementary School: Reading Blitz
8:30-9:15 a.m.
Community members have been invited to come in and read to students.
Lower Richland High School: Parent Involvement Day
8:30 - 2 p.m.
After a great breakfast, parents are invited to attend workshops, visit classrooms and enjoy lunch with their child. The workshops will focus on teen health issues and online tools to keep parents informed about their children’s education.
