Richland One Schools to Celebrate Thanksgiving

Richland One Schools will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with feasts, musicals, community service and a lot of fun. Here’s a sampling:

Rosewood Elementary School: "The First Thanksgiving"
Monday, Nov. 16, at 10:30 a.m.
Teacher Karen Bybee’s first-grade class will perform "The First Thanksgiving" in handmade paper Pilgrim hats, Indian headdresses and vests made of paper bags. There’s even a Mayflower made of poster board and a paper sail. This simple, but meaningful production is sure to be a lot of fun as its cast of narrators, Wampanoag chorus, Pilgrim chorus and cast of characters (Squanto, Chief Massasoit, John Carver, Priscilla Mullins and Mistress Bradford) retell the story this nation cherishes.

Dreher High School: Les Miserables
Nov. 19-22, at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinee at 3 p.m., Admission: $8/adults and $6/students, Dreher High School Auditorium
Looking for a family outing before heading into the Thanksgiving holidays? The Dreher High School Department of Theatre Arts invites the community to kick off the season by attending Les Miserables, a story of hope, triumph and redemption. This abbreviated production is a musical adaption of Victor Hugo’s epic story of love, sacrifice and atonement-just the thing to get you into the holiday spirit.

Webber Elementary: Thanksgiving Baskets/Program
Monday, Nov. 23, at 9 a.m.
Webber Elementary continues its 25-year tradition of giving food baskets to those in need in the Lower Richland community. Everyone gets in the holiday spirit at the annual Thanksgiving program which includes songs, skits, poems and hundreds of students dressed in Thanksgiving costumes as Pilgrims and Indians.

Rosewood Elementary School: "Days of Long Ago"
Monday, Nov. 23, noon - 1:30 p.m.
Those Pilgrims knew how to have a good time playing games of Buzz, Crambo, the Preacher’s Cat and Pass the Stone, but what will today’s kindergarten students think about those games from long ago? Kindergarten classes will travel back in time as students play these and other games played at the first Thanksgiving. They also will try their hands at marbles, egg races and games where you push a potato to the finish line with your nose. All of that fun is sure to work up an appetite, so following the games students will snack on a few Pilgrim favorites including dried beef (beef jerky), saltines and cheese cubes.

Logan Elementary: Thanksgiving Feast
Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 9:45 a.m.
Students in the Montessori class will spend the morning making butter, popcorn, cranberry sauce and Johnny cakes before sitting down to their Thanksgiving feast.

All District Third-graders: Nutcracker Ballet
Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m., Koger Center
About 2,000 third-graders will attend the Carolina Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker at the Koger Center. During this annual field trip, it's quite an event to see all those little faces captivated by the live performance of this holiday classic.

Brennen Elementary School: Family Feast
Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 1:30 p.m.
Teacher Langhorne Stinnette’s third-grade class will be preparing a feast for parents who will join their children for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
