Richland One Schools to Honor Veterans, Military

In honor of Veterans Day, Richland One schools will recognize the men and women who serve or have served their country through military service. Events planned for Veterans Day include the following:

St. Andrews Middle School: Bags of Honor
You could call it "artwork with a message." During the week of November 2, St. Andrews Middle School students will decorate 600 brown paper bags that will be used by customers at the Ft. Jackson Commissary on Veterans Day. Students will include drawings, facts and personal messages thanking veterans and members of the military for their service.

A.C. Moore Elementary: A Special Celebration
On Tuesday, November 10 at 9 a.m., veterans are invited to attend a celebration which includes songs honoring each branch of the military, and photo presentations of loved ones (of students and staff) who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Every fourth-grader at A.C. Moore Elementary will participate in the tribute. There will be special, reserved seating for all veterans attending the event.

Webber Elementary: Bring a Veteran to School Day
Students will invite relatives who are veterans to come to school with them on Wednesday, November 11 from 9 - 10 a.m. to visit classrooms, and share their stories with the school in a special assembly. In addition, a reception will be held to honor the veterans. Students and staff have been asked to wear patriotic colors for the event.

Logan Elementary School: Entire school walks to Veterans Day Parade
On Wednesday, November 11, at 9 a.m., all Logan Elementary School students will walk to the Veterans Day Parade downtown, wave flags and cheer on the military processions as they pass by.

Carver-Lyon Elementary: White Table Ceremony
Carver-Lyon third-graders are planning a White Table Ceremony for Wednesday, November 11 at 9 a.m. During the ceremony, a table will be set for veterans around the world and students will place symbolic items on the table. The ceremony also includes patriotic songs, poems and readings to honor veterans. America’s White Table, a book written by Margo Theis Raven, also will be read at the event.

Meadowfield Elementary: "Flat Stanley" travels with troops
Students and staff of Meadowfield Elementary support troops year-round with letters from home, posting the names of servicemen, and a special traveling paper doll called Flat Stanley. Flat Stanley is a project of second-graders who create the paper doll and send it to deployed troops who are asked to take pictures of Flat Stanley’s adventures, write a description of the experiences and mail the photos and writings back to students. The students mark the locations where Flat Stanley visits on a map and make a scrapbook from the information they receive from the troops.
