Richland One Announces Upcoming October Events

October 7: Richland One Schools Celebrate International Walk-to-School Day
Get out your walking shoes. On Wednesday, October 7, Richland One students at Rosewood and Forest Heights elementary schools will join millions around the world as they walk and bike to school on International Walk-to-School Day.

At 6:45 a.m. Forest Heights students will gather at Emmanuel Church, 1723 Blue Ridge Terrace, to begin their walk to school. Rosewood students will meet at the Publix grocery store, 3300 Rosewood Drive at 7:05 a.m. to begin their trek. Walk-to-School Day is an international effort to promote safe walking and bicycling year-round. As always, drivers are reminded to use caution daily as students and other pedestrians make their way to school and other locations.

October 8: Pledge to Read for the Record
Will a million readers around the world take on the challenge to read to pre-school age children during the Read for the Record event on Thursday, October 8?

Richland One students and staff will join readers worldwide in this global initiative to encourage more adults to read to pre-schoolers. Adults reading aloud to young children help develop the youngsters’ literacy and reading skills. The book chosen for this year’s event is Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. During last year’s event nearly 700,000 readers shared the classic children’s tale Corduroy.

In conjunction with the event, Richland One’s Office of Instructional Technology will be sponsoring reading parties for district staff between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at its conference room at the Waverley Administration Center, 1225 Oak Street. More details on this special literacy event are available at www.readfortherecord.org . Make your pledge to read this engaging story and help us set a world record. Together, we’ll celebrate the joy of reading all over the globe!
