National Celebrity Chef Headlines Richland One’s Lights On Afterschool Celebration

Billionaire Donald Trump is among the many celebrities to feast on the culinary masterpieces of Chef Marvin Woods, the keynote speaker of Richland One’s 2009 Lights On Afterschool Celebration which will be held Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 a.m. at the Drew Wellness Center, 2101 Walker Solomon Way.

At 3 p.m. Chef Marvin will meet with 300 Richland One students in the afterschool programs of Burton-Pack, John P. Thomas, Sandel and Carver-Lyon elementary schools to whip up some delicious and nutritious afterschool snacks. They will meet at the district’s Central Kitchen, 1224 Whitney Street.

Chef Marvin, an Emmy-nominated TV host, chef and author, includes among his extensive culinary pedigree the opening of Harrah’s at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, as well as the Seas Grill and Windows on the World in New York. But more importantly, Chef Marvin is well-known nationally for his work with youth in combating childhood obesity by engaging students in afterschool programs that teach students how to cook and prepare nutritious meals.

"Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic nationwide," said Dr. Traci Cooper, Richland One’s director of extended-day programs. "Our district continues to lead in efforts to encourage healthy eating habits for students and in providing outstanding afterschool care for thousands of Richland One families."

Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide movement working to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality afterschool programs, is sponsored locally by Richland One, SCE&G, the City of Columbia, Junior Achievement, State Farm Insurance, Junior League of Columbia, University of South Carolina - Arnold School of Public Health, Palmetto Health Hospital - Office of Community Services and the National Afterschool Alliance.
