Three Richland One High Schools Rated ‘Excellent’ in Foreign Language Education

Three Richland One high schools - Dreher, A.C. Flora and Keenan - have received the highest rating possible in the area of foreign language education by the State Department of Education, which recently announced the results of its assessment of foreign language programs in approximately 50 South Carolina high schools.

Dreher, A.C. Flora and Keenan were evaluated during the 2008-09 school year, and all three received an "Excellent" rating. Fatiha Bencheikh, the district’s coordinator of foreign language and international programs, said the ratings reflect Richland One’s longstanding commitment to excellence in foreign language education.

"For over a decade, Richland One has set itself apart in the area of foreign language education in the Southeast by offering a comprehensive and state-of-the-art foreign language program to every child starting in elementary school," Bencheikh said.

"Richland One has led the way nationally and statewide through its advanced recruitment strategies and comprehensive language offerings, as well as its cutting-edge foreign language curriculum," she said.

The district offers a rich curriculum, one that is aligned with the national and state standards, the most current research findings in foreign language education and the expectations of colleges and universities. Among its notable foreign language accomplishments, in 2002 Richland One became the first district in the United States to start a Chinese education program in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China.
