Richland One Educators and Supporters Honored

Richland One Principal Named 2009 SC D.A.R.E. Educator of the Year


Mikell Owens, principal at H.B. Rhame Elementary School, has been named the 2008-2009 D.A.RE. Educator of the Year by the South Carolina D.A.R.E. Association. Owens received the award in recognition of his outstanding support of the D.A.R.E. Program at his school. D.A.R.E., which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a highly-acclaimed national program which teaches students how to resist peer pressure and live productive lives free of drugs and violence. Tuskegee Airmen Foundation Names Scholarship for Richland One JROTC Instructor
The Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Foundation has named a cadet scholarship in honor of Senior Master Sgt. Levarn Adger who has served as the aerospace science instructor at C.A. Johnson High School for 15 years. A $500 scholarship will be awarded in spring 2010 to a graduating senior cadet who holds at least a B average in C.A. Johnson AFJROTC and at least a B average overall in school. The Tuskegee Airmen Foundation is honoring Adger for his leadership last summer in assembling and packaging award ribbons and packets for all 889 AFJROTC units, an accomplishment which impacted more than a half million students worldwide.



The Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Foundation has named a scholarship in honor of Senior Master Sgt. Levarn Adger, a C.A. Johnson High School aerospace science instructor.


Convocation celebrates Richland One’s after-school programs


Richland One’s Office of Extended-Day Programs held its annual convocation and reception September 2 at Gibbes Middle School. The theme was "Cooking Up Success!" The featured speaker was chef Janet Poleski. This year's Great Friend to After-school Award winners were recognized during the program and received beautiful ceramic plates hand-painted by after-school program students. Winners were (from left) Mill Creek Elementary Principal Steven Cannon; Lawrence Moore of the Lower Richland Youth Development Organization; Essie Perkins, after-school teacher/tutor at Arden Elementary; Norvell Pettus of SCE&G/SCANA Corp.; emcee Joe Pinner of WIS-TV; Imogene Clarke of Student Nutrition Services; Ida Thompson of Instructional Technology Services; W.G. Sanders Middle assistant principal Ceasar Leysath, who accepted the posthumous award for Margie Sartori, a former lead teacher for the comprehensive remediation program who died in December 2008; and Mitch Wyatt of the Office of Communications. Wal-Mart on Forest Drive also received an award.
