Richland One to open "new" Sanders Middle School
It’s a lucky number 13. When the "new" Sanders Middle School opens this fall, it will be Richland One’s 13th completed renovation/construction project since the massive upgrade of 17 middle and high school facilities began in the district in 2002.
Four other projects - Alcorn Middle, Columbia High, A.C. Flora High and C.A. Johnson High schools - are scheduled to be completed in May 2010.
The "new" Sanders is located on the former site of Keenan High School at 3455 Pine Belt Road, just off of Two Notch Road. (The new Keenan is on Pisgah Church Road.). But when Sanders students and staff return on August 17, they will see renovations and additions that have transformed the facility into a middle school. New administrative and fine arts areas have been added to the campus and the remainder of the facility, including classrooms, has undergone renovations and a major facelift.
Sanders Principal Andrenna Smith is very pleased with the renovations. "The whole renovation process and end result has far exceeded my expectations," said Smith. "It’s wonderful. I’m overwhelmed and very proud of the transformation that has been made in the school."
Parents and students can check out the new Sanders for themselves at the school’s open house on Thursday, August 13 at 6 p.m. Inquiries from the media should be directed to the Richland One Office of Communications at 231-7504 or 231-7510.
