Three More Richland One Graduates Named 2009 National Merit Scholarship Winners
Three additional Richland One graduates have been named winners in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to academically gifted students.
The district congratulates the following graduates from the Class of 2009 for their selection as scholarship recipients:
* Dreher High School graduate Philip A. Cross was awarded a scholarship from Auburn University. His probable field of study will be aerospace engineering.
* Noah Fram, another Dreher High School graduate, has received a scholarship award from Vanderbilt University. Economics is Fram’s probable career choice.
* Clemson University awarded a scholarship to Ian Taylor, a graduate of A.C. Flora High School, who lists engineering as his likely career field.
With the addition of Cross, Fram and Taylor, Richland One now has a total of nine National Merit Scholarship winners. During the first rounds of awards in June the district was notified of the awards of six other graduates.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships. Winners are chosen based on strict criteria such as high standardized test scores, academic record and community activities. There are three types of awards: National Merit $2,500 scholarships that are single-payment awards; corporate-sponsored Merit/Achievement awards that may be renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study or one-time awards; and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards that are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.
