Richland One Awarded $2.1 Million Grant for After-school Programs

Richland One will receive $2.1 million over four years to enhance its after-school programs at schools in the Eau Claire community.

Federal funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program has been awarded to Hyatt Park Elementary, Alcorn Middle and Gibbes Middle schools. The grant money will allow these schools to expand their after-school programs from three days a week to five days a week and to focus on providing students with academic remediation, tutoring and enrichment activities. Workshops and other specialized activities also will be available to parents.

"In addition to promoting efforts to boost academic achievement, these new grant awards have been tailored to meet the specific needs of students and families at these three schools," said Dr. Traci Cooper, the district’s director of extended-day programs.

"The after-school program at Alcorn also will address issues such as family literacy, student attendance and physical well-being/health. The Gibbes program will allow students to broaden their cultural experiences with assistance from the Columbia Museum of Art. At Hyatt Park, partnerships with USC and other community groups will provide intense mathematics programs and mentors for each student."
