Richland One Kicks Off Title I Summer Enrichment Program

Hundreds of Richland One students are gladly returning to school this month to enjoy the Title I Summer Enrichment Program.

For the next two weeks, more than 1,500 students will be attending programs at Burton-Pack, Carver-Lyon, Gadsden, Hyatt Park, Edward E. Taylor, John P. Thomas, Watkins-Nance and South Kilbourne elementary schools. Monday through Thursday, there’s a full day of learning that includes reading, math, music and other academic classes in the morning. But in the afternoon, learning really becomes fun as students test their creative skills in a program called Camp Invention, which requires them to solve problems by exploration and creating their own inventions.

Richland One’s Title I director Linda Gillespie says making learning fun also has other benefits for students. "Research shows that engaging students in summer programs like these helps them to retain their reading skills and reduces the achievement gap that can occur between lower and higher income children and youth," she said.

The Title I Summer Enrichment Program is also a great bargain for hard-working Richland One families. The program, which includes breakfast, lunch and transportation, is provided at no cost to parents. The program runs through June 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. There are no classes on Fridays.
