Richland One Announces Summer School Programs, Camps
Summer school in Richland One has something for everyone. Interested in a space, science and engineering camp at the Challenger Learning Center? Need some pointers on taking the SAT or ACT? Maybe you have a middle school student interested in learning about computers and using the latest software. Or maybe you’re a high or middle school student who needs to take more basic courses like English, algebra or biology.
A listing of summer courses, camps and enrichment programs is available on the district Web site www.richlandone.org. Class locations, dates, requirements and costs (if any) also are available on the site as well. Students outside of the district can attend many of these programs, although some of the programs may be only for Richland One students.
Here’s just a sampling of a few of the programs available in the district:
High School Summer Program
Location: Dreher High School, 3319 Millwood Avenue
Registration dates: June 3-5, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Dreher
Class Dates: June 9-July 31 (Monday through Thursday)
Two sessions available: 8 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. or 12:45 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Courses offered: English I-IV; algebra I, II, IA, IB; geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, government, US History, PE, keyboarding, business computer applications, French, and Spanish
Costs: Vary, based on course load, family income and status as a district or non-district student.

Middle School Summer Program
Locations: Gibbes, Crayton and Southeast middle schools
Class dates: June 4-July 1, Mondays through Thursdays
Class sessions: 8 a.m. - noon or 12:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.

Summer Blast at Title One Schools
Locations: Burton-Pack, Carver-Lyon, Gadsden, Hyatt Park, South Kilbourne, Edward E. Taylor, John P. Thomas and Watkins-
Nance elementary schools
Attendees: Only Richland One students currently attending these eight schools in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade
Class dates: June 9-June 26 (Monday through Thursday)
Class time: 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Costs: Program is free and includes breakfast, lunch and transportation.
Courses: reading, writing, math and enrichment activities

Space, Science and Engineering Summer Camp
This wildly popular camp offers science buffs lots of fun and adventure.
Location: Challenger Learning Center, 2600 A Barhamville Road
Camp Dates: Sessions held June 9 - 12 and June 16-19 from 9 a.m.-
3 p.m., Monday through Thursday
Attendees: rising fifth through eighth grade students
Costs: $200 per student per session, no transportation or lunch provided

Richland One Adult Education Summer Program
It’s never too late to get your high school diploma. This summer busy adults can take algebra, history and other courses they may need to obtain their diploma. No time to sit in a classroom? Some courses can be taken on-line through South Carolina’s virtual classes program.
Class date: classes begin June 9 at 8:30 a.m.
Registration: June 2, 3 and 5
Contact: Office of Adult Education, 343-2935 to get more details about pre-assessment tests, courses, class dates and costs.
Note: Students cannot register nor attend classes until pre-assessments are completed.
Heyward Career and Technology Center Summer Camp 2008
Richland One seventh- and eighth-grade students can learn the basics of food preparation, jewelry making, woodwork and ceramics.
Class dates: June 9-19 (Monday-Thursday) from 8 a.m. - 12 noon
Cost: $25 (The registration deadline is June 1.)
