AAP Course Offerings and Descriptions

Introduction to Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted and Talented Students*
 
Course Description:
This course is designed to prepare the teacher to organize and deliver appropriate curriculum for gifted and talented students. Teachers will explore curriculum models, instructional strategies and assessment to meet the needs and abilities of gifted and talented students. Current technology will be employed in researching and writing units and lesson plans.
 
*In order to fulfill Regulation 43-220 (II.C.), teachers of a gifted and talented course or class must be endorsed to teach gifted and talented classes by the State Department of Education by summer 2002.
Requirements for Teacher Endorsement in Gifted and Talented Education
 
Professional certificate in the teacher area
AND
Nature and Needs of Gifted and Talented Students (3 hours)
 
Introduction to Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted and Talented Students (3 hours)
 

Grandfather Clause Teacher Endorsement in Gifted and Talented Education

For those teachers who already have experience in gifted and talented education, there are several paths leading to endorsement. A two-year, phase-in period is provided to allow experienced teachers to meet the endorsement requirements. The requirements and options are as follows:

 

Professional certificate in the teaching area
AND
Nature and Needs of Gifted and Talented Students (3 hours) or the equivalent
OR
Introduction to Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted and Talented Students

AND one of the following options:

Verification of three years of successful teaching experience in gifted and talented education (verification by AAP Office)
OR

Advanced Degree in Gifted and Talented Education (Masters, Educational Specialist and/or Doctorate)
